UPDATE ON THE GENERAL COURT MARTIAL

National Press Release

The Gambia Armed Forces wishes to update the general public on the ongoing general court martial between the State and Brigadier General Ansumana Tamba and Brigadier General Umpa Mendy. It could be recalled that the two generals accompanied the former President Yahya Jammeh to Equatorial Guinea in January 2017 and failed to return until after one year. They were subsequently arrested upon their return on the 21st January 2018 and charged with a single count of desertion. In that regard, a general court martial was constituted to hear the case. Consequently, the prosecution closed their case upon calling several witnesses of which the defense applied for a no case submission.

However, a ruling was delivered today 18th October 2018 overruling the no case submission. The defense requested for ample time to enable them prepare their case. As a result, the case was adjourned to Wednesday 5th December 2018 for continuation.
