GAF Agric Task Force Rice Production Project Launched

GAF Agric Task Force Rice Production Project Launched
The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Agricultural Task Force has officially launched its Rice Production Project, marking a significant step in the nation’s drive toward food security and self-sufficiency. The initiative is designed to harness the discipline, organizational capacity, and manpower of the military to support national agricultural development. By focusing on rice—the staple food for most Gambians—the project aims to reduce dependency on imports, strengthen local production, and contribute to the government’s broader agenda of achieving sustainable food systems. The launch ceremony highlighted the importance of agriculture as a strategic sector, with senior officers emphasizing that the military’s involvement is not only about defense but also about nation-building and supporting socio-economic growth.

The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with the cultivation of designated plots of land allocated to the Task Force. Modern farming techniques, mechanized equipment, and improved seed varieties will be introduced to maximize yields and ensure efficiency. Training programs for soldiers and collaborating farmers are also part of the plan, ensuring that participants acquire practical knowledge in irrigation, soil management, and post-harvest handling. Beyond production, the initiative envisions creating a structured supply chain that links military farms to local markets, schools, and institutions. This approach will not only boost rice availability but also create employment opportunities, stimulate rural economies, and encourage youth participation in agriculture.

The launch of the Rice Production Project reflects GAF’s commitment to contributing to national development beyond its traditional security role. It demonstrates how military resources can be mobilized to address pressing civilian challenges such as food insecurity. By integrating agriculture into its operational framework, GAF is setting a precedent for innovative civil-military cooperation in The Gambia. The project is expected to serve as a model for future agricultural ventures, reinforcing the idea that national defense and food security are interconnected pillars of stability. With strong leadership, community involvement, and government support, the Rice Production Project has the potential to transform local agriculture and significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imported rice.
