The Contingent Commander (Contico) of Gambian Company number twenty-one (GAMCOY 21) to Darfur, Sudan Lieutenant Colonel Abdoulie Manneh on Friday 30 March 2018 led troops of the contingent on their first Physical Training (PT) exercise around the perimeter of the United Nations African Mission to Darfur (UNAMID) Super Camp in El Fasher.

GAMCOY 21 on PT in EL-Fasher Supercamp in Darfur. In his address to troops prior to the commencement of the exercise, the Contico reminded them that the military job cannot be fully carried out in the absence of physical fitness. Lieutenant Colonel Manneh described PT as a sine qua non for effective and efficient conduct of ensuring the security of the mission headquarters, among other duties entrusted to the Contingent.

“It is through physical fitness that we can cope with the physical demand of our daily military routine as well as remain healthy and ensure that our body is in a good shape at all times”, he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Manneh further noted that the fitness levels of his men will not be compromised, as the accomplishment of their mission very much depends to a great extent on their state of health and well- being. He reasoned that the security situation in Darfur is unpredictable, and went on to remind the troops that it will pay off if everyone maintains his/her fitness levels at all times.
