GAF Education

Education is a key in any nation’s development since it builds and prepares future leaders. Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Education is not an exception. GAF education Service was created in November 2011. The Unit is responsible for ensuring quality education in the three schools established by the GAF. Hitherto, Battalion Commanders were responsible for the supervision of schools in their Units. However, due to their huge and pressing tasks, Commanders often pay little attention to the development of these schools.

Aim

The aim of this project is to highlight the needs to develop and expand GAF Nursery School program to Lower Basic, Upper Basic and Senior Secondary as already started with Yundum barracks so as to provide quality, affordable, accessible education to the families of offers and soldiers staying within and outside Military Barracks and neighbors in a friendly and safe learning environment.

Brief History of GAF Education

GAF education Service was created in November 2011. The Unit is responsible for ensuring quality education in our schools. Before the establishment of GAF education. Battalion Commanders were responsible for the supervision of schools in their Units. However, due to their huge and pressing tasks, Commanders often pay little attention to the development of these schools, so that prompt the birth of GAF Education. The schools in the military barracks are not only admitting soldiers’ and officers’ children but also children from our neighboring towns and villages. The GAF education Service has over the years opened its doors to anyone who want to have quality education at very minimal cost.

 

Farafenni Barracks Nursery School

Farafenni Barracks was the first to set up a school in 1996. The have a Nursery school of seven (7) teachers including Islamic and Christian religious knowledge teachers. Two of the teachers are (2)trained and qualified. Three (3) class rooms, and total enrolled students of one hundred and eighty-five (185). The Nursery school provides three years of nursery education.

Fajara Barracks Nursery School

Fajara barracks was the second barracks to established a school in 1999.The school has five classrooms with total enrolled students of one hundred and eight two (182). The Nursery school also provides four years of nursery education, with six teachers (6) three trained and qualified, three not trained, including Islam and Christian religious knowledge.

Fajara Barracks Lower Basic School

Fajara Barracks Lower Basic School was establishment in September 2016 with a total number of teachers four (4) all trained and qualified. The number of students are seventy-five (75).The lower basic school have grade one and two only.

Yundum Barracks Nursery School

The school at Yundum Barracks was established in 2008. The school started with a Nursery School and gradually developed to a lower Basic school. The nursery school provides four years of nursery education, with six teachers (6) three trained and qualified and the other three not train including Islam and Christian religious knowledge. The total number of students is three hundred and thirty-four (334).

Yundum Barracks Lower Basic School

Yundum Lower Basic School is providing six-year lower basic education for our children. The School has a total enrolled students of six hundred and sixty (660), with thirty teachers(30) including Religious Knowledge and French teacher and five civil teachers (5).The teachers are all trained and qualified with only one female all are soldiers The school is double shifting ,because the grade are double.

 

Yundum Barracks Upper Basic School

Yundum Barracks Upper Basic School was established in September 2015 with total enrolled students of 57 two went on transfer and five repeated in grade eight. The school have now developed to grade nine with a total number of students are two hundred and eighty-seven.
