The Gambia Armed Forces today Thursday 29 August 2019 laid the body of the former president of the Republic of Gambia in the National Assembly where he is accorded a state funeral. The former president Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara was the 1st Prime Minister and the first President of the Republic of the Gambia. He was a highly respected statesman and an icon of human rights and champion of pan Africanism.
He died on the 27th of August 2019 at the age of 95 and would be buried at the National Assembly grounds. The state has declared a week of national mourning and all national flags to be lowered down to half-mast. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
