NAVY ARRESTS THREE CHINESE FISHING BOATS FISHING ILLEGALLY IN THE GAMBIAN WATERS

The Gambia Navy in collaboration with the fisheries inspectors from the department of fisheries of The Gambia arrested 3 Chinese fishing vessels on the 21st and 22nd of September 2018 respectively.

The vessels were arrested while a joint Sub-Regional Fisheries operation was going on between Senegal, Guinea Bissau and The Gambia in the three countries waters sponsored by the European Union under PESCAO program.

The vessels GOLDEN LEAD 1 was intercepted by The Gambia Navy’s patrol boat (GNS MUSA MALIA) and arrested for tampering with the fishing nets and fishing in wrong position, while YI FENG 17 and YI FENG 18 were intercepted by the Senegalese Navy boat (FULLADU) in the Gambian waters. The two vessels were intercepted and arrested for not having registration and tonnage certificate onboard for inspection.

The two vessels were later handed over to the Gambia Navy and escorted to Banjul port. All the three vessels are currently under naval custody and awaiting further actions to be taken.
