GLORY FOR THE KHAKI BOYS
All roads led to the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Monday 1st of May 2017 where Gambians from all works of life converged to celebrate International Labour Day (Workers Day). The event began with a march pass by companies and institutions in both the public and private sectors. This was followed in the afternoon by a sports competition in various sporting disciplines such as volleyball, athletics, musical chair, and tug of war, greasy pole, potato race, sack race, pillow fight, race for sports journalists and Managing Directors.
The Gambia Armed Forces took an active part and were represented by the Sports Company at all levels marking the 2017 Mass May Day sports. Sixty four (64) companies participated in this years event. The day availed thousands of workers from public and private institutions the opportunity to interact and have fun as they compete in different sporting events under the spirit of friendship and unity. It was graced by the Vice President, Her Excellency Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawyer Ousainou Darboe and Minister of Youths and Sport Honorable Henry Gomez together with other cabinet ministers. The Gambia Armed Forces has always actively participated in all the events of this day and at the end of the competition, GAF male volleyball player Lance Corporal Ebrima Jatta won the Greasy Pole by setting a record in the history of the Mass May Day sport by being the only person who won it three times in a row. Subsequently, GAF won in all of the following events: 100 meters, 200 meters, 4 by 100 meters Relay and the female Tug of War. GAF scored 193 points and finished as the overall best. The event culminated in a banquet at Paradise Suits Hotel where the award ceremony took place. The President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) Mr George F Gomez handed over a certificate of participation to Staff Sergeant Modou Lamin Dampha while Lance Corporal Ebrima Jatta received a cheque amounting to five thousand dalasis for winning the Greasy Pole.
